Highlights of 2017

Mike Briggs drives Tony Viana’s BMW E30

At the Festival of Speed at Zwartkops on the weekend of the 27th and 28th January, Mike Briggs took the invitation from Peter Kaye-Eddie to drive his biggest rival’s original car - Tony Viana's Winfield BMW E30 325i Shadowline.

Mike is an absolute gentleman and one of the most talented racing drivers South African race tracks have seen, and was obviously determined to be competitive in an unfamiliar car but also stay out of trouble in the wet 1st Heat. 1 of the best images from the weekend was during the 2nd Heat on-track tussle between Mike and the very Group N Opel Superboss he drove in the 90’s.

Paolo in the 'Big 7'Overall Class win for the 745 Modified

Probably the sweetest moment of 2017 came for Customer Racer Paolo Cavalieri in the awesome ex-Viana BMW E23 745i Wesbank Modified at the Festival of Speed at Zwartkops Raceway (27th and 28th January 2017) - the driver and car were on song all weekend, with Paolo preferring to be cautious in the wet first race.

In the 2nd Heat the 'Big 7' and Paolo were posting quick and consistent times, pulling away from the turbo-charged Porsche 924 and a Ford Mustang V8, and catching and then overtaking the race leader’s 600BHP+ Capri V8 and then onto take the chequered flag in 1st place.

The jubilant scenes afterwards will remembered by the team - a true testament to the car, but more so the late SA motoring legend, Tony Viana.

At the BMW M Media Track EventBeing part of the BMW M Media Track Event in Port Elizabeth

Due to Alec’s (Evolution 2 Motorsport) and Paolo Cavalieri’s long-time relationship and association with BMW, BMW South Africa approached us to be a part of their BMW M Media Track Experience in Port Elizabeth. BMW South Africa wanted both the legendary BMW (E23) 745i Winfield race cars at the Aldo Scribante Raceway in Port Elizabeth on 31 May and 1 June 2017.

Paolo thrilled the attending journalists and officials by taking them for passenger rides in the Group 1 BMW E23 745i race car. He also did some ear-numbing runs in the Wesbank Modified race car and he also gave informative talks on BMW’s history in South Africa, and the legend Tony Viana.

The red 745’s have icon status in South Africa, but the Group 1 car now has worldwide recognition as it was used in BMW Group’s new M760Li’s marketing campaign, being in their International Advert. To see Paolo’s acting skills, click here

SEFAC Ferrari celebrates it’s At the SEFAC Day at Kyalami50th Anniversary in South Africa

Every year Ferrari owners and fanatics diarise the annual SEFAC Day. In 2017, the SEFAC Club moved the date slightly later from mid-July to September. It’s always a busy but exciting day where owners have the opportunity to experience their Ferrari’s as they were intended – on the track.

It’s always a special day for the Evolution 2 Motorsport staff, as we get out to the track and we run the 1961 Ferrari F250 GTM SWB for our client Paolo Cavalieri. SEFAC Ferrari celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2017, in South Africa. The celebrations consisted of 2 events: firstly at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Johannesburg (23rd September 2017) and then at the Franshoek Motor Museum, in Cape Town (3rd October 2017).

A big thank you to Paolo for taking Alec and Wade down to Cape Town for a memorable day.

The start of Heat 1 at KillarneyThe Winfield BMW E23 745i Modified races again in Cape Town

Tony Viana thrilled the South African motorsport public with the iconic red Winfield BMW E23 745i Modified on our race tracks.

It was one of the reasons Paolo wanted to take the car back to Killarney 30 years later, for the Ford and Friends weekend. The appreciation and smiles from the Western Cape crowd were phenomenal (thank you, it meant a lot!).

Although the 745i Modified was shunted in the first corner shunt of the first heat, Paolo showed his experience and a level head to finish the day on the podium overall, despite a damaged car.

It was a first for our Head Technician Wade, as it was his first time in Cape Town. Thank you to Paolo for a memorable weekend for the team.

A visit to the FMMA few laps at FMM

There was a double celebration at Franschhoek Motor Museum on Sunday 8 October 2017 when a group of overseas and local BMW International club members visited the Franschhoek Motor Museum to view the museum’s exhibits and sample some of the L’Ormarins wines.

A surprise for the visitors took place when Paolo performed a couple of demonstration laps around the quadrant in the legendary Winfield BMW E23 745i Modified that won the 1986 Wesbank Modified Saloon Championship in the hands of Tony Viana.
