Now: BMW 745i owned & driven by Paolo Cavalieri (Picture by, Andrew Culbert)The Magnificent Seven: In 1985 the late Tony Viana and mechanic, sadly the recently late, Kobus van der Watt decided to embark on a very interesting project, building the world’s first ever 7 Series race car. Main reason for this venture was to utilize the brute force of the ///M Powered M88 E23 3.0i litre 745i engine. It worked and Viana went onto win the 1985 Group One Championship.

In 2006 the Evolution 2 Motorsport team, led by experienced BMW Technician Alec Ceprnich, restored the car to its former glory for motor racing connoisseur Paolo Cavalieri. Immediately the car attracts enthusiasts who remember Viana power sliding the big 745i around Sunset Corner at the old Kyalami beating the likes of Alfa Romeo and Ford to victory.

Since its return to local race tracks the Evolution 2 Motorsport prepared legend has won many events it has taken part in. The most notable achievement being victory at the David Piper Festival of Speed, where the Winfield liveried BMW thrilled spectators by its glorious straight six roar and sideways antics through the corners.

Although driven competitively by Cavalieri, the Viana machine lives true to its heritage of remaining immaculate and a fantastic tribute to BMW’s local racing exploits. This can be attributed to the precision and pride shown by the Evolution 2 Motorsport crew through their efforts in preparing and presenting the car at race events. The 745i looks fit to rest in BMW’s internationally known Mobile Tradition Museum, but what better way to showcase its ability and remember the efforts of Viana and Van der Watt, by seeing it doing battle on our local circuits or taking guests around at club days.
